ÖBB’s Rail Cargo Group is to combine its new TransFER Budapest – Brno service launched on May 5 with its existing service from Budapest to Köseköy in Turkey, making it possible to ship freight from Turkey to Hungary and on to the Czech Republic twice a week.

Belt Railway Co of Chicago has rolled out PS Technology’s CrewPro Short Line for crew scheduling and hours-of-service requirements. The cloud-based software automates previously labour-intensive record-keeping and scheduling processes, while helping to ensure regulatory compliance.

On May 6 waste manager Biffa opened a £4∙2m rail hub at Renwick Road in east London which GB Railfreight will use to transport refuse on five trains a week to sites at Roxby, Scunthorpe, Leeds and Manchester. Biffa aims to transport 50% of all its waste by rail by 2025. Mick Davis, Chief Operating Officer for Biffa’s Resources & Energy Division, said ‘our new rail hub marks the next step in our strategic partnership with GBRf to increase our capacity for transportation by rail. It will help us reduce dependence on vehicles on the road and reduce the emissions we produce.’

Union Pacific has announced plans to open a ‘pop-up’ intermodal terminal at its West Colton rail yard in Q2, providing customers in southern California’s import distribution region with an intermodal service to Chicago and in the future services to Dallas and the southeast.

Kansas City Southern’s emissions reduction targets have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative as consistent with levels required to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement to keep warming to below 2°C above pre-industrial levels.

DB Cargo UK is building an inland border control facility at its Barking intermodal terminal in east London, funded with £470 000 from the government’s Port Infrastructure Fund. The Customs Approval Area is intended to speed up the movement of goods in and out of the country following the end of the Brexit transition period.
