The STR Brennero Trasporto Rotaia subsidiary of Italian motorway company Autostrada del Brennero has agreed to buy a 75% stake in rail freight operator InRail. STR already owns a 95·5% stake in Rail Traction Co and 50% of Lokomotion, and the acquaition will make it the second largest rail freight operator in Italy after Mercitalia.
Canadian Pacific has scheduled a virtual special meeting on December 8 for shareholders to vote on the issuance of the CP common shares to KCS stockholders in connection with the proposed acquisition of Kansas City Southern, which has the support of both railways’ boards. KCS stockholders are scheduled to vote on the merger at a virtual meeting on December 10. ‘We are pleased to ask our shareholders to support this unique, once-in-a-lifetime partnership to create the first US-Mexico-Canada rail network’, said CP President & CEO Keith Creel. The companies expect the transaction to close by Q1 2022.
The Berlin Senate has called tenders for a study into the feasibility of transporting freight on the capital’s S-Bahn network, possibly using existing vehicles. The Federal Ministry of Transport is to cover 70% of the cost of the one-year study.
UTLC ERA has developed a CO2 counter which can calculate online the energy consumption and the emissions of container shipments on the 1 520 mm gauge routes between China and Poland via Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus. UTLC ERA reports that 513 700 TEU was transported by rail from China to Europe between January and September, producing 34 300 tonnes of CO2. Transporting a comparable volume by sea would produce 163 800 tonnes of CO2, road 3 052 000 tonnes and air 18 105 200 tonnes, it estimates.
Leasing company European Loc Pool has obtained approval for the use of Stadler EuroDual locomotives in Austria. Cross-border operation to Hegyeshalom in Hungary, Bratislava in Slovakia and Břeclav in the Czech Republic is expected to be approved by the end of the year, and ELP is also planning to obtain approval for the Balkans and the Betuwe Route to Rotterdam.
Sinara Transport Machines’ Ural Locomotives plant has delivered the first of 22 twin-section 2ES7 Black Granite electric heavy freight locomotives ordered by Kazakh freight operator SilkWay Transit.
