Swiss Post has extended its contract with SBB Cargo from 2023 to 2026. SBB Cargo runs 45 parcel and 15 postal trains a day using a fleet of 470 wagons. Swiss Post said half of all letters and parcels in Switzerland use rail for at least part of their journey, and rail is the fastest option for reaching Valais, Ticino and Graubünden.

RJ Corman Railroad Group has formed the Knoxville & Cumberland Gap Railroad through the acquisition from Norfolk Southern of the 95 km Clinton – Clairfield line in Tennessee and the 115 km line between Beverly, Tennessee and Middlesboro, Kentucky. The Knoxville & Cumberland Gap Railroad will have trackage rights between the two branches and interchange wagons in Norfolk Southern’s Sevier Yard. ‘We see a lot of potential for growth, expansion, and economic development in the region’, said RJ Corman President & CEO Ed Quinn.

Innofreight

ServiceCargoRail is to act as Innofreight’s exclusive partner for the maintenance of InnoWaggons. SCR is owned 50:50 by Innofreight and Ferrolog. ‘The Innofreight Group will continue to grow in the coming years’, said Gerald Schretzmeier of SCR on Febraury 10, ‘With a modern and efficient maintenance strategy, we at SCR will support the Innofreight Group to achieve common goals together.’

Spanish infrastructure manager ADIF has awarded Acciona Construcción, Control y Montajes Industriales and Sociedad Española de Montajes Industriales a €10·4m, 10-month contract to install a third rail to provide dual gauge access to the Barcelona-Can Tunis logistics centre, where the Castellbisbal to Morrot line enters the Barcelona port area. The contract also includes electrification works.

Medway is to build a €63m rail-served logistics centre at Vila Nova de Famalicão, north of Porto for completion in 2024. The 220 000 m2 site will have four 750 m tracks, a storage capacity of 11 000 TEU and a connection from the electrified line from Porto to Valença do Minho and Vigo.

Kazakhstan’s national railway KTZ reports that transit freight in 2021 totalled 20∙9 million tonnes, up 2% on 2020. A total of 1∙066 million containers were transported in transit, up 22% on 2020, including 660 000 TEUs from China to Europe or vice versa and 69 000 TEU between China and Russia.
