KAZAKHSTAN: National railway KTZ has certified the use of Bombardier Transportation ETCS over a Teltronic Tetra voice and data communications network on the 300 km route from Zhetigen to Altynkol on the Chinese border.

Teltronic said this provided ‘irrefutable proof’ of the viability of ETCS over Tetra, with voice, signalling and other operational data using the same infrastructure. It believes that the technology may also be applicable in CBTC or PTC environments.

According to the Spanish company, certification followed ‘intense co-operation’ between the suppliers. Laboratory integration work was undertaken at Göteborg in Sweden ahead of installation.

‘Tetra is spectrally more efficient, has a greater range of functions, and is significantly cheaper than GSM-R; that’s why this technology is breaking through even in European countries where GSM-R is the commonly deployed technology’, said Transport Business Development Director Felipe Sanjuán. ‘In other parts of the world, where customers can choose the technology to support ETCS, Tetra becomes a very interesting option, especially in those countries that don’t have allocated spectrum to GSM-R for transport.’
