SLOVENIA: The European Commission agreed on March 15 to provide €99m from the Cohesion Fund to support the €149·5m national roll-out of GSM-R.

The project will require more than 250 base stations on the 1 230 route-km rail network, along with a central control system and management centre. Completion is planned by the end of 2015.

'This is a very positive step towards the modernisation of the Slovenian rail network', said Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn. 'The improvements to the communication system should increase safety, and reduce journey times as well as delays.'
