CHINA: The National Development & Reform Commission has approved the Hechi – Nanning railway project submitted by the Ministry of Railways and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The 225 km line is priced at 22·7bn yuan, with funding to be split equally between the ministry and the regional government.

Hubei Provincial Development & Reform Commission has approved the first local railway project in Yichang. Construction of the 30·9 km mixed traffic line connecting Zijingling with Yaojiagang is expected to take two years at a cost of 2·11bn yuan. There will be four stations, and an annual freight capacity of 20 million tonnes.

  • Electrification of the 467 km Urumqi – Alashankou section of the Lanzhou – Urumqi route through the Gobi Desert in western China was completed on September 1. Work began in March 2009 and has cost 1·4bn yuan.
