BELGIUM: In order to respond to emergencies on the underground sections of the Diabolo link to Brussels Airport, infrastructure manager Infrabel has acquired two road-rail fire-fighting vehicles at a cost of €3m.
To be based at fire stations in Brussels and Zaventem, the vehicles will be able to travel at up to 40 km/h on rail, carrying a crew of eight as well as 2 500 litres of water and 500 litres of foam.
The MAN vehicles have been equipped for fire-fighting duties by Rosenbauer of Austria, and are fitted with the Loctrac ZW 332 road-rail system supplied by Zweiweg of Germany.
Specialist equipment for tackling fires in rail tunnels includes additional lighting, infrared cameras and a water spray to protect the vehicle and its occupants.
