KONTRON: Embedded computing specialist Kontron will be showcasing its next generation of ‘Internet of Things’-enabled onboard data systems for rail applications at InnoTrans.

Kontron’s TRACe range of open-architecture operational computers has been designed to offer highly integrated and fully validated hardware and software which is ‘IoT ready’. The computers are intended to solve the security, interoperability, reliable connectivity, power efficiency and scalability problems that can limit the potential of connected train systems, Kontron says. Instead of operators having to replace existing train-borne IT systems with bespoke IP-enabled components, TRACe gives them a compatible IoT gateway that delivers secure communication between legacy systems and cloud-based servers.

The TRACe product family has been enhanced by the addition of the IoT Stack, which enables additional functionality such as video surveillance, passenger infotainment, onboard wi-fi and train-to-ground communications. Other possible applications include fleet management and safety-critical tasks.

Operators and asset owners can monitor and analyse real-time condition and performance data, generate actionable information, and create easy-to-read dashboards and reports, the company says. New passenger-facing services such as onboard entertainment and ‘bring your own device’ functionality can also be provided through TRACe.

Kontron also claims that it is the first embedded computing supplier to offer full security protection embedded in its products. This Approtect security layer offers an ‘out-of-the-box’ range of protection capabilities that includes IP and integrity protection, license creation, management and tracking, license model implementation as well as the assignment of privileges and access levels. Approtect also allows software applications to be secured even post-deployment.
