PHILIPPINES: Japan International Co-operation Agency is supporting a programme to use Japanese expertise to improve the energy efficiency of railway operations in the Philippines, lowering costs and reducing the environmental impact.
JICA is providing LRT1 operator Light Rail Manila Corp with technical assistance for energy conservation initiatives, with Japanese specialists to identify opportunities to upgrade train control units, motors and substations. Efforts to recover regenerated energy and implement energy-efficient driving techniques are also covered.
The project is to run from July 2025 to May 2026. The lessons learned will be disseminated to aid the government and other railway operators in enhancing efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the entire rail sector.
