ALGERIA: Work is underway to complete the airport extension of Alger Line 1, in what China Railway Construction Corp says is the first metro project in Algeria to have a Chinese company as general contractor.
A ceremony on July 15 formally launched work to install the track, complete the stations and undertake systems integration for the extension, which will run 9·6 km from El Harrach Centre east to Houari Boumedienne International Airport with nine underground stations.
The project is being undertaken by CRCC through a joint venture with local state enterprises. CRRC said the line will help to meet ‘surging’ demand for transport by connecting major residential districts, a university campus, business hubs and the airport, helping to reduce traffic congestion and enhancing the quality of life for residents. It will also showcase Chinese expertise internationally, and strengthen bilateral co-operation in construction technology and knowledge sharing.
Opening of the extension was originally envisaged for 2022, but the civil engineering construction works were suspended during the pandemic.
