GEORGIA: The European Bank for Reconstruction & Development has agreed to provide a €50·6m sovereign loan to finance modernisation of 12 Tbilisi metro stations.

The financial package includes a €5m grant from the Green Climate Fund.

The stations will get better lighting and ventilation and more energy efficient escalators, while improvements to drainage will make the network more climate resilient. An asset management plan will also be developed to reduce maintenance downtime.

‘We hope that the project’s successful completion will encourage more people to use public transport by enhancing the metro system’s accessibility, dependability and safety’, said Minister of Finance Lasha Khutsishsvili on January 17.
