SOUTH KOREA: Woojin Industrial Systems has delivered the first of nine two-car rubber-tyred automated guideway transit vehicles that it is supplying for the Yangsan Line in Busan.
The vehicles are being built under a 34·2bn won contract signed in August 2022. The technology was developed jointly by Korea Railroad Research Institute and Woojin Industrial Systems.
The vehicle is now scheduled to undergo test runs; the remaining eight trainsets are due to be delivered by August.
The Yangsan Line will be the second automated metro in South Korea after Busan’s rubber-tyred Line 4, and the first single-track light metro line in the country. Trains will be able to pass each other at passing loops at stations.
The peoplemover vehicle features a collision energy absorption device, tyre puncture detection and an inspection system which will use the TE-R wireless network to provide data for preventive maintenance.
It also features a regenerative braking system and wireless phone charging ports.

The windows will automatically darken to protect residents’ privacy when the train passes through a densely populated area.
The elevated Yangsan Line will run 11·4 km from the Nopo terminus of metro Line 1 to Bukjeong in Yangsan, serving seven stations.
Busan Transportation Corp has reported an 89% construction progress rate in early May. Construction started in 2018 and opening is scheduled for 2026.
