AUSTRIA: Wiener Lokalbahnen has selected Bombardier Transportation Austria as preferred bidder to supply up to 34 light rail vehicles, the operator announced on November 23.

Bombardier’s bid in the tender called in February was judged as the best. The contract, due to be signed after the statutory 10-day standstill period, covers a firm order of 18 TW500 LRVs with options for 16 more. Bombardier would also undertake repairs under warranty in WLB’s workshops.

Entry into passenger service is planned from 2021. As well as replacing high-floor vehicles, the LRVs are needed to introduce the planned 7½ min frequencies on the line between Wien and Baden. The vehicles will be equipped with air-conditioning, a passenger information system and CCTV.
