RENFE Operadora and infrastructure authority ADIF have approved a joint programme to upgrade the ASFA intermittent automatic train protection system, including new in-cab displays of braking curves and target speeds.

The first phase running until the end of 2006 should see a prototype developed with ASFA supplier Dimetronic Signals, which if successful would then be installed on 320 Renfe locomotives and multiple-units as well as 80 shunters operated by ADIF.

The second phase would see remaining ASFA equipment replaced by the end of 2008 involving the replacement of 2800 sets. Renfe will provide €80m of the €85m total cost. A later phase would see an increase in the number of transmission frequencies used by ASFA balises.
