CONSTRUCTION of St Louis Metro’s Cross County light rail extension was inaugurated on April 9 with a ground-breaking ceremony at the site of Forsyth station, Missouri. The 13 km route links the existing Forest Park station, which will be rebuilt, with Clayton and Shrewsbury, running largely at grade but with three sections in tunnel and two elevated. There will be nine stations, two of which will have park-and-ride spaces for a total of 1800 vehicles.

The project is in the hands of a joint construction management team of 26 local companies led by Parsons Brinckerhoff, Jacobs Civil, STV and Kwame Building Group.

Opening of the new line is scheduled for 2006. Metro will require a further 22 cars to handle an estimated 18000 additional daily riders.
