NOMAD has signed a deal with Netherlands Railways, mobile and fixed line telephone operator KPN, television company RTL and content provider Heuvelman to test wireless broadband access onboard a train operating between Haarlem, Maastricht and Heerlen.

Updated travel information and news will be supplied to the train at each station via Nomad’s wireless Wimax system (RG 5.05 p256), for display on six double-sided screens in each carriage.

Passengers with portable computers will be able to access the internet, connecting via wireless access points in the carriages linked to lineside base stations which will be installed along the route to provide a corridor of wireless coverage.

Nomad says information will be sent and received at speeds of up to 36 Mbit/s, with no loss of signal in tunnels, bridges or cuttings.
