EXIDE Technologies Network Power will be exhibiting valve-regulated gel-acid batteries, a low-maintenance alternative to vented lead-acid batteries which are now in use in the UK, as well as with French, German and Swiss rail operators.Following trials, the batteries are now fitted to Networker EMUs used by British train operators Southeastern and First Capital Connect, and fitment is underway at Merseyrail and First ScotRail. The batteries do not require topping up, as they allow for gas recombination as pressure builds within the battery, and so there is a reduced risk of poor maintenance leading to shortened life. There is no danger of spillage, even if the battery is damaged, and they are more resistant to vibration than vented lead-acid batteries. n
