On January 4 Transport for London began trials of an Emergency Help Point at Addington Village bus/Tramlink interchange. A two-way audio-visual ISDN link between passengers and a 24 h control centre allows passengers to see and hear the controller. When an alarm is pressed, the CCTV captures four still frames; controllers can contact the emergency services if needed.

TfL believes this is the first transport application of this equipment, which has been used in US theme parks. According to the Managing Director of Help Point Ltd Sheila Browse, ’these trials represent the culmination of two years’ development, during which we have tried to consider all aspects of customer service.’
