CONSTRUCTION of the first stage of an outer metro ring line around the Russian capital will get underway in mid-2007, according to Moscow Metro President Dmitri Gayev.

He said on May 12 that a second ring line was needed urgently to relieve overcrowding on the existing lines. He envisages that providing direct suburb-to-suburb links will reduce the number of passengers travelling in and out to reach interchanges closer to the city centre.

The outer ring will run between 3 km and 5 km further from the city centre than the existing Line 5 ring. The first section will be built in the northwest, linking Polezhayevskaya on Line 7 with Sokol on Line 2 and Savyolovskaya on Line 9.

Next year is also due to see the completion of a short northern extension of Line 10 from Chlakovskaya to Trubnaya, providing interchange to Lines 1 and 6 at Sretenskiy Bul’var and to Line 9 at Trubnaya. n
