SEPTEMBER 16 saw the inauguration of the long-planned Berlin U-Bahn extension to Pankow, where an interchange with the S-Bahn has been provided. The eastern end of Line U2 had been closed beyond Senefelderplatz since July 10 to allow the connection of the 390m extension from Vinetastrasse. Completion of the DM105m project, first proposed in 1987, gives BVG its 170th U-Bahn station.

Last month also saw the opening of a 1·7 km extension to the BVG light rail network in northwest Pankow. Route 50 has been extended from Buchholz Kirche to Guyotstrasse at a cost of DM22m; the new line is is expected to carry around 5000 passengers/day.
