NOW nearing completion in Transwerk’s Bloemfontein factory in South Africa is the prototype for a fleet of rebuilt Class 34 diesel locomotives. To be known as Class 39, the rebuilt Co-Co units will offer a 15% increase in available traction power to give a nominal rating of nearly 2500hp.

EMD 16-645 E3 engines are being rebuilt as Type E3BN with better fuel injection and E3B turbochargers that will improve fuel efficiency. Microprocessor controls are being fitted, traction motors rebuilt and long-range fuel tanks installed. Other improvements include better braking performance and ergonomic cabs, while the opportunity has been taken to overhaul or update many other components. n
