THIEVES trying to access the contents of a stolen safe left the 15 kg box on a railway line in Austria in the hope that a collision with a train would force it open.

The impact succeeding in opening the safe, but the €5000 which it contained was scattered across the track and the criminals had to flee before they could collect it. ’The loco was very badly damaged and there was nearly a derailment’, said police spokesman Michael Haider. ÖBB spokesman Rene Zumtobel said it was the first time a train had been used to open a safe in Austria.
