A CONSORTIUM of Siemens and Nour Communications Co has been selected to undertake a €91m renewal of signalling and communications on the Saudi Railways Organisation network.

Under a contract announced on December 21, the consortium will provide a Simis computer-based interlocking, Vicos control system, and Trainguard 100 ETCS Level 1 equipment, together with Simis-LC controls for modernised level crossings, which will be supervised using CCTV. Both the 556 km freight line between Riyadh and Dammam and the 449 km passenger route will be equipped with GSM-R radio communications. Siemens’ share of the contract is valued at €59m.

The work is intended to pave the way for more intensive operation on both routes, ahead of the construction of the Saudi Landbridge between Riyadh and Jeddah (RG 3.05 p134).
