SOUTH AFRICA: Gautrain concessionaire Bombela has awarded Thales a contract to upgrade the Johannesburg – Pretoria line’s fare collection system to offer a wider range of ticketing options.

The current system was installed by Thales in 2010 for the FIFA World Cup. As well as the current Gold Card smart cards, following the upgrade passengers will be able to use contactless cards issued by local or foreign banks.

Thales is to supply its web-oriented TransCity system, which is designed to simplify day-to-day management as well as improve the passenger experience.

The enhancements cover Gautrain’s entire network of station access gates and ticket vending and top-up machines, as well as nine station car parks and 125 buses. Thales will also supply a new back office system. The improvements are due to be rolled out progressively for completion in 2017.
