UKRAINE: The Ministry of Infrastructure has signed a memorandum of understanding with Deutsche Bahn covering co-operation in the transport sector and the development of national railway Ukrzaliznytsia.

The MoU was signed by Minister of Infrastructure Vladislav Krikli during the World Economic Forum in Davos on January 22, in the presence of Prime Minister Oleksiy Honcharuk.

Kryklii said DB’s experience of improving the efficiency of rail transport would come in useful during the reform of the Ukrainian rail sector. ‘An important component of the implementation of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU is the adaptation and implementation of EU directives related to railway transport’, he said. ‘We expect that the new law on railway transport will be adopted by parliament in 2020. The experience of such a company as Deutsche Bahn is important for its practical implementation.’

Ukrzaliznytsia said its supervisory board had ‘become aware’ of the memorandum, which it stressed was ‘an initiative and the prerogative of’ the government.
