JAPAN: Toshiba has introduced a 20Ah-HP version of its 20 Ah SCiB rechargeable lithium-ion battery cell, designed for heavy-load applications where high power input and output are essential, such as rolling stock traction and emergency power.
The 20Ah-HP cell has a 1·7 times higher input and 1·6 times higher output rating than Toshiba’s current 20Ah cell, making it better suited to rapid charging and regenerative braking applications. It produces less heat, which might enable operators to specify a simpler cooling system.
Under test conditions the cell was found to retain almost 100% capacity after 8 000 charge/discharge cycles, compared to a 10% decrease in the capacity of the current 20Ah design.
It is the same size as the 20Ah product, enabling existing customers to easily upgrade.
