Graz University of Technology / Faculty of Civil Engineering Sciences seeks to appoint a full professor in the field of Railway Infrastructure Design with appointment effective as of July 1, 2020.

The successful applicant will be appointed on the basis of a permanent employment contract according to Section 98 of the Austrian Universities Act (§98 Universitätsgesetz).

The professorship of Railway Infrastructure Design concerns further development and dimensioning of the railway track system and its components. This covers superstructure as well as substructure highlighting interactions of the various components under different loading scenarios. Using existing data sources as well as the possibilities given due to digitalisation track and turnout behaviour and thus their future maintenance demand is already considered within dimensioning the components.

We are looking for a candidate with an outstanding scientific track record who is able to develop a strong and visible research programme targeting further development of the track system. The candidate’s research activities should be in one or more of the fields: component testing, numerical modelling, and dimensioning of track and turnout which allows paying special attention to track stiffness. Experiences in research and development are to be demonstrated by projects within or in cooperation with railway industry and / or infrastructure managers. Further knowledge in measuring and testing techniques are desired.

The position will require the willingness to engage actively in intensive cooperation within the scientific and industrial community, especially within the newly established Research Centre Railway Systems and the Fields of Expertise Mobility & Production and Sustainable Systems of Graz University of Technology.

Next to the described qualification, the requirements for employment are:

A university education in civil engineering or traffic engineering – infrastructure

A completed doctoral degree (PhD) in a relevant subject. The degrees must comply with Austrian accreditation standards.

Teaching experience and very good didactics, preferably shown by a habilitation (venia docendi) or an equivalent scientific qualification

Proven leadership skills

To ensure effective international representation of the field, excellent spoken and written competence in English is required. Fluency in German or the willingness to acquire it is also expected.

Relocation to live in the greater Graz area is required.
