CHINA: CSR Ziyang has unveiled a 3 000 hp diesel-battery hybrid locomotive rated for use at marshalling yards, and a LNG-fuelled loco for mainline freight use

The manufacturer says the hybrid design’s ability to use the battery to store and recover regenerated braking energy can reduce fuel consumption by at least 40% and comply with US EPA Tier 3 emissions standards, while reducing noise and extending maintenance cycle times. This could give a potential 30% cost saving over the life-cycle of the locomotive.

The result of five years of research, the new locomotive follows on from a 1000 kW design which has undergone a year of trials with Rizhao Iron & Steel Co.

The dual-fuel diesel/LNG locomotive is intended for mainline freight use and is expected to produce significantly lower emissions than an equivalent diesel locomotive.
