Network Rail undertook more than 200 engineering projects with a total value of £70m over the four-day Easter period.

RSSB has published guidance to help railway companies cut their non-traction energy bills, reduce their carbon footprint and improve sustainability. RSSB said nearly 20% of energy use is for non-traction purposes including lighting, heating and cooling buildings and IT. The guidance outlines how behaviour change, remodelling of infrastructure, adopting energy-efficient technology and renewables and other innovations can cut energy usage, and explains what technology is relevant to each situation and the typical payback.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch has released a report into accidents and near misses involving trains and track workers outside possessions. Five recommendations cover: improvements in procedures and training to enable people in leadership roles to adapt to changes in circumstances; improvements to the non-technical skills training; changes in competence requirements for people who lead track work in higher-risk situations; making location-specific photographic and video information more easily available to staff involved in planning and leading work on the track; and improvements to the collection, analysis and reporting of information on incidents.

From May 21 one Hull Trains service per day in each direction will call at Cottingham station, providing a direct link to London King’s Cross.
