Network Rail is seeking to establish a framework agreement for the development of a Signal Controlled Warning System – Strategic, intended to reduce the risk of workers being struck by trains whilst working on or near open lines. SCWS(S) would be implemented in three phases: feasibility study & concept demonstrator; working prototype including operational trials; manufacturing & roll out. Requests to participate should be submitted by January 26.

A joint venture of AECOM and SLC Rail has been awarded a framework contract with a maximum value of £30m to provide rail advisory services to Coventry City Council. It covers grant funded projects only, and includes developing business cases, negotiating funding models, project planning, programme management, timetable performance modelling and station operation planning.

Stations on the c2c network are being equipped with digital displays showing how full each coach of the next train is likely to be, enabling passengers to decide where they want to wait to board. The data shown is updated each week using average loading figures calculated from weighing equipment in each coach at each station. The loading data is compiled by ACT Informatics, and the data feed is provided by Wordline.

Network Rail has completed a £4m project to stabilise a cutting on the West Coast Main Line near Watford, where a train derailed in September 2016 after hitting a landslip caused by torrential rain. All vegetation was removed so that 1 km of rock netting and soil matting could be installed on top of more than 500 rock anchors which were embedded into the chalk face.

On November 20 Mayor of London Sadiq Khan announced that Night Overground services would begin in east London on December 15, with 24 h London Overground services on Friday and Saturday nights between New Cross Gate and Dalston Junction, extending to Highbury & Islington next year.

The fourth Hacktrain hackathon is being held on November 24-26. Trainline will provide a team of mentors and coders to support the event, and is to award a paid internship to the ‘most innovative hacker’ taking part.
