UK: Rail sector strategic innovation body GBRX has begun work to develop an AI Opportunities Action Plan. This aims to define the strategic approach and practical conditions required to use artifical intelligence to improve operations, support safety, enable smarter infrastructure management and enhance the passenger experience.
A team of experts will look at how the operationaly complex rail sector can benefit from experiences in other industries. The team is led by Dr Catriona Campbell, EY’s UK&I Head of Artificial Intelligence, who has implemented sector plans in health, financial services, defence and public infrastructure.
‘AI has the potential to transform how rail systems operate’, Campbell said on June 3. ‘This is about applying technology in ways that are safe, structured and scalable, so it makes a meaningful difference to operations, efficiency and experience. GBRX is taking a pragmatic, delivery-focused approach to this challenge.’
GBRX Managing Director Toufic Machnouk said ‘advanced technologies like AI will improve performance, safety and efficiency, but only if the right conditions exist to deploy them effectively’.
The AI Opportunities Action Plan for Rail will be published later this year.
