UK: Independent train ticket retailers have welcomed confirmation in the government’s rail reform bill that there will remain a role for the private sector under the future Great British Railways, which will set fares, collect revenue and have its own retailing platforms.

Anthony Smith, Chair of the Independent Rail Retailers association which represents third-party ticket retailers, said ‘we particularly welcome the government clearly re-affirming that independent retailers will compete in a fair and open market and the explicit recognition of the significant value of independent retailers who innovate and drive up standards for passengers’.

IRR said ‘a successful outcome from this bill will mean the creation of market conditions which ensure all retail players are treated genuinely fairly alongside Great British Railways’, with ‘the long-term certainty needed for independent retailers to thrive — helping fill empty seats, grow passenger numbers, and support a more sustainable railway for the future.’

The Online Travel UK association, which represents companies in the wider travel booking sector, said ‘we are pleased the government has reaffirmed its commitment to a thriving third-party ticket retail market, recognising the value these retailers bring in driving competition, innovation and improved passenger experience. With GBR’s activities set to be governed by an Office of Rail & Road-managed code of practice, it will be important that this framework delivers genuine safeguards and ensures all retailers can compete on a level playing field.’
