UK: Network Rail and Capital City College in London have launched a Network Rail Academy offering a pre-apprenticeship programme to help 16-19 year olds take their first steps towards a career in rail.
It will provide young people with foundation skills feeding into apprenticeship schemes such as rail engineering technician and rail infrastructure operator. Learners will work towards a level 1, 2, or 3 engineering qualification, enhanced with real-world industry experience, mentoring from Network Rail staff and training in essential skills such as interview techniques, communication and professional development.
‘The rail industry is a fantastic place to work, and in need of skilled, motivated workers to keep us moving’, said Richard Turner, Head of Apprenticeships, Graduates & Industry Development at Network Rail, on May 15. ‘By working with local colleges, the Network Rail Academy offers real-life, job-ready skills and training that is immediately relevant to not just Network Rail, but many other employers too.’
Sharon Wallace, Assistant Principal at Capital City College’s Enfield Centre, said ‘we want to re-energise young people who are seeking education, employment or training opportunities. The Network Rail Academy offers a solid start – practical, hands-on learning, professional mentoring and a clear route into a skilled job.’
