UK: QTS Group’s electrification subsidiary REL has delivered a pilot training programme designed to upskill the next generation of overhead line equipment linesmen and support the long-term future of the sector.
REL said this formed part of its plans to ‘tackle the rail industry skills shortage head on’, with data from the National Skills Academy for Rail projecting that 12 000 additional workers would be required annually to fulfil demand for services.
REL said that despite the role being ‘incredibly technical’, it had opened up the programme to people from all walks of life and attracted a diverse range of applicants with an age range from 18 to 43.
The intensive six-week training programme combined the full OLEC 2 curriculum with additional qualifications and competencies, including IPAF certification, OTP plant operator training and advanced construction techniques.
All candidates successfully completed the programme and were offered roles as Trainee OLEC 2 Linesmen. Many progressed into live project environments, gaining hands-on experience supported by industry-based mentorship.
Four participants have since secured permanent contracts within REL.
‘It’s no secret there is a sparsity of skilled professionals coming into our industry, and we are committed to addressing this issue’, said Operations Director Jamie Hutchinson on April 13.
‘At REL, we recognise the importance of offering excellent traineeships to individuals from a wide range of career backgrounds – it’s the best way to futureproof our workforce.’
