UTY Talgo 250 Afrosiyob trainset in Bukhara, Uzbekistan

UZBEKISTAN: National railway UTY has awarded manufacturer Talgo a 10-year contract worth nearly €80m for the comprehensive maintenance of its six Talgo 250 trainsets used on Afrosiyob-branded services.

The Spanish supplier said the deal announced on January 2 is its largest maintenance contract in Uzbekistan, after more than 15 years of successive agreements, and ‘consolidates its position in a key market where its trains represent a technological and connectivity leap for the country’.

UTY’s first two nine-car Talgo 250 trainsets entered service in 2011. Two 11-car sets followed in 2017, and two more in 2021, along with four additional cars to extend the original two sets to 11 cars.

The 1 520 mm gauge trainsets with passive tilt operate at a maximum speed of 230 km/h, although they are designed for 275 km/h.
