GERMANY: Kapsch CarrierCom is to migrate what it says is 'the world's largest GSM-R network' to the IP-based 3GPP release 4 technology by mid-2014 under a €15m contract awarded by infrastructure manager DB Netz at the end of July.

Kapsch CarrierCom already provides support for DB's GSM-R, and says upgrading the Network Subsystem responsible for switching requirements and access to other networks will bring significant life cycle cost savings and facilitate the introduction of new applications.

'With this new technology, we want to prepare our railway network for the expected increase in traffic volume', said Martin Kaloudis, CIO, Infrastructure, at Deutsche Bahn AG. 'The new geo-redundant network structure guarantees higher network performance as well as higher network availability.'
