UKRAINE: Construction of a 75 km standard gauge rail link from the Polish border to the city of Lviv is among the projects selected for a share of the latest round of EU Connecting Europe Facility funding.

The €76m grant will be used to implement the first stage of the construction of a 1 435 mm gauge track alongside the existing 1 520 mm gauge line between Mostyska II station close to the Polish border and Sknyliv on the western edge of Lviv. The route would be used by both freight and passenger trains, offering new opportunities for intermodal traffic and reducing the burden on road checkpoints.

National railway Ukrzaliznytsia has already moved the border control point from the frontier to Mostyska II station, which has made it possible to speed up the processing of trains.

Meanwhile, the construction of a 22 km standard gauge railway between Uzhhorod and Chop on the Slovak and Hungarian borders is in its final stages. The Connecting Europe Facility is providing a grant to cover 50% of the 1·3bn hryvnia cost.
