CANADA: Regional transport agency Metrolinx has awarded EllisDon Corp a C$23·8m contract to build a dedicated platform on the west side of Toronto Union station for use by the future Union Pearson Express airport service to Toronto Pearson International Airport.

The platform will have platform edge doors, a customer service desk, seats, ticket vending machines, fare card validators and accessible toilets. There will be a mezzanine level with staff and train crew facilities.

This is the last of the construction contracts for the UP Express, which is scheduled to open ahead of the Pan/ParaPan American Games in July 2015. The AirLINX Transit Partners consortium has completed more than 50% of the 3 km elevated spur which will link GO Transit's upgraded Kitchener line to the airport's Terminal 1.

Metrolinx has ordered 12 two-car diesel multiple-units from Sumitomo and Nippon Sharyo to operate UP Express. Services will initially run every 15 min, calling at Bloor and Weston, giving a journey time of around 25 min on the 25 km route.
