The Ferrocarril Central, linking the port of Callao and Lima with the high Andes, was privatised in 1999 when the former national railway organisation Enafer was broken up. It is operated on a 30-year concession by a consortium headed by Juan Olaechea and Railroad Development Corporation of the USA. At Galera, it attains an altitude of 4 783 m, the second highest in the world.
