First line opened 1872; network now comprises 12 routes with 196 stops. See Hannover network map.
The first of three cross-city tunnels was opened in 1975, since when some 18·6 km of underground route has been completed and all but two routes (10 and 17) now run in tunnel in the city centre with high-level platforms at stops.
A 1·5 km surface extension east to Misburg opened on December 14 2014. Planned extensions include east from Roderbruch to Misburg and south from Wallensteinstraße to Hemmingen.
Üstra has 143 type TW2000 modern LRVs, and since 2015 also has an expanding fleet of TW3000s being delivered from a consortium of Kiepe Electric and Alstom; to the 146 already on order a further seven cars were ordered in March 2018, allowing further withdrawal of older TW6000 cars.
