This joint venture between Rurtalbahn GmbH and Stadtwerke Verkehrsgesellschaft Frankfurt am Main mbH (VGF) was formed in 2005. In March 2010 Danish Railways (DSB) announced it would buy VGF Frankfurt’s shareholding.

Initially Vias had a 10-year contract to run the Hanau/Darmstadt–Eberbach lines (the Odenwaldbahn) serving 33 stations.

It is currently the operator of a number of local and regional lines in Hesse and Rheinland-Pfalz:

  • RB 10 East Rhine Railway: Frankfurt - Koblenz (from 2010 until September 2023)
  • RB 66 Pfungstadt Railway: Darmstadt – Pfungstadt (from 2011 until November 2027)
  • RB 80 / RE81 / RB82 / RE85 / RB86 Odenwald Railway, Frankfurt Hbf – Darmstadt – Reinheim – Wiebelsbach – Erbach – Eberbach (from 2005 until November 2027)

From December 2017 it also took over operations of the RB 34 Schwalm-Nette-Bahn (Mönchengladbach – Dalheim) and RB 39 Düssel-Erft-Bahn (Düsseldorf – Neuss – Grevenbroich – Bedburg), with operating contract until December 2029.
