SINGAPORE: Metro operator SMRT Trains has installed giant chess sets at Bras Basah and Botanic Gardens on the Circle Line as part of its Communities in Station programme to ‘enhance vibrancy and enrich the commuter experience’.
Other initiatives include placing pianos and harps at selected stations, and table tennis at Esplanade and Marina Bay stations.
‘Beyond delivering safe, reliable and sustainable transport, we strive to make every journey more engaging and meaningful’, explained SMRT Trains President Lam Sheau Kai. ‘Through initiatives spanning the arts, music and sports, SMRT Trains seeks to connect with communities of diverse interests. The introduction of our giant chess sets is one such effort, encouraging commuters, young and old, to take a mindful break, enjoy strategic play and foster social connections during their daily travels.’
Mayor of Central Singapore District Denise Phua said the chess sets ‘represent more than just a game, they’re catalysts for community connection. In our fast-paced city, they offer commuters a moment to pause and engage with others. Through Chess @ Central, we’re making recreational learning accessible to everyone, regardless of age, background, or ability.’
