SPAIN: Operator SFM has awarded Comsa, Tecsa, Mab and Coexa a 12-month €28·9m contract to build a short extension of Palma de Mallorca light metro Line M1.

The 1·4 km extension will run from the current northern terminus of the metre gauge metro at Universitat de les Illes Balears across the Sarria River to the Parc Bit industrial estate. Part of the route will run on the surface, and part will be in tunnel.

Journey time from the centre of Palma de Mallorca to Parc Bit is expected to be 15 min. The extension is projected to increase daily ridership on M1 by around 25%; at present 85% of people working in or visiting Parc Bit travel by car.
