CZECH REPUBLIC: Plans to raise the maximum speed on principal lines from 160 km/h to 200 km/h have been put on hold by infrastructure manager SŽDC, which now believes the benefits would not justify the cost of eliminating all level crossings and upgrading signalling systems.

The plan was first put forward in 2009, with the 39 km Blazejovice – Nezamyslice section of the Brno-Perov route included in the Ministry of Transport’s programme for completion by 2015 at a cost of KC24m.

Raising speeds above 160 km/h is now planned for 2030-50. This is dependent on a decision on whether to go ahead with the proposed construction of new high speed lines, which is expected in 2017.
