INDIA: Field trials of the Indigenous Automatic Train Supervision signalling technology have begun on Delhi Metro’s Red Line.

The domestic i-ATS technology is being jointly developed by Bharat Electronics Ltd and Deli Metro Rail Corp as part of the government’s Make in India strategy. ‘India will become one of the few countries in the world to have its own ATS product which can be implemented in other metros as well as railway systems’, DMRC explained when the trial went live on December 24.

DMRC said i-ATS would significantly reduce the dependence of Indian metros on foreign suppliers. It described the project as a major step towards the development of indigenous communication-based train control technology to replace European and Japanese products.

As well as being used on the Red Line, i-ATS is to be adopted for Delhi Metro’s Phase 4 corridors, where the application will also incorporate predictive maintenance modules.
