NETHERLANDS: NS Reizigers has awarded telecoms technology company KPN and subcontractor Funkwerk a contract to supply 1 400 GSM-R cab radios within 15 months. The transceiver modules will have filters custom-designed by Funkwerk to block radio signals that might interfere with the train communications.

According to Funkwerk CEO Kerstin Schreiber, this is ‘the first project worldwide to use these special filters and will give NS Reizigers a leading edge, but also mean that communication in rail transport will become significantly more reliable.’

The central controller, operating unit and loudspeakers will be combined to provide a compact system mechanically adapted to suit the trains’ structural environment.

KPN is responsible for project management, staff training and eight years of maintenance support.
