AUSTRIA: The first generation of Austrian Federal Railways’ Railjet push-pull trainsets are undergoing mid-life refurbishment after more than 15 years of service.
‘The upgrade of our Railjets is an important step in modernising the existing fleet and adapting it to the standards of the new-generation Railjets’, said ÖBB CEO Andreas Matthä. ‘The first upgraded Railjet will make its debut on the Südstrecke with the opening of the Koralmbahn in December 2025.’
The refurbished interiors will match the second generation of Railjet sets, with a modern wood look, new seats, floor coverings, footrests and grab handles and larger folding tables. There will be an upgraded passenger information system and modified pushchair spaces. A snack and hot and cold drink vending machine will be installed.
There will be additional compartments and improved equipment for train crews.
Work to refurbish the 60 Siemens Mobility trainsets is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2031.
