CANADA: Canadian National and Progress Rail are working with biofuel producer Renewable Energy Group to test renewable fuel blends, with the aim of gaining a better understanding of their long-term durability and operational impact, especially in cold weather, and to plan modifications which might be needed to fully exploit their use over the next decade.

CN said the use of 100% bio-based diesel fuel could be an important step in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from its existing locomotives while alternative propulsion technologies are being developed.

‘CN is committed to adapting our business to changing climate conditions’, explained outgoing President & CEO Jean-Jacques Ruest on November 3. ‘The successful testing and procurement of renewable fuels is part of a portfolio of initiatives to meet our 2030 science-based target. The extent of our ability to fully deploy and implement new technologies will require collaboration between locomotive manufacturers and fuel producers.’
