LATVIA: Belkommunmash has been selected to supply 12 trams to the city of Daugavpils. The Belarusian company, bidding with the local Agmen Consulting Bureau, was chosen over the Daugavpils Locomotive Repair Factory on January 8. The value of the bid is around 4·6m lats, and the trams are to be delivered by October 20.

Both bidders were involved in a previous tender for new trams in late 2011. On that occasion, Vagonmash’s winning bid was withdrawn when it was revealed that the company did not meet the regulations of the competition.

The tram order is part of a modernisation programme, which also includes renovation of 6·2 km of the 1 524 mm gauge network and improving accessibility. EU funds will meet 83% of the total cost of the modernisation.
