Book review

by Mervyn Jones

Following on the heels of the author's guides to French (RG 8.06 p476) and Swiss (RG 7.07 p454) heritage and tourist railways is this volume covering Austria.

The question of what to include as being of interest to the visitor will always be open to debate, and for this latest book the scope has been widened beyond just heritage and tourism-based lines.

The 172 locations detailed include 47 routes operated by Austrian Federal Railways, including the famed Semmering route. Running from the Achenseebahn to the Zillertalbahn, the book also describes 12 museums, five freight operators and 15 funiculars in its 208 pages.

Locations and contact details are given for each line, along with information on the rolling stock and brief histories. The text is accompanied by 147 photos and 20 maps.
